Across the globe, the UN Global Compact marked International Anti-Corruption Day 2024

11 Global Compact Country Networks celebrated the 2024 International Anti-Corruption Day (IACD) (9 December), each contributing to the global fight against corruption with unique approaches but shared goals:  recommitting to the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability, and to tackling these global and systemic issues together. The different events engaged over 1,200 participants.

Empowering Youth as Agents of Change

Youth engagement reflected the 2024-2025 global campaign developed by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)—the guardian of the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and Principle Ten of the UN Global Compact.

In Bangladesh, 75 participants including young leaders, academia, Government representatives, corporate representatives, and civil society participated in discussions showcasing university students exploring innovative strategies to combat corruption. The highlight of the event was the launch of the first-ever inter-university integrity competition titled "Corruption Through My Eyes," which seeks to empower students to creatively present their perspectives on corruption.

Similarly, India focused on youth and cross-sector collaboration, launching integrity-building programs targeting young professionals in healthcare and business management. The event, attended by over 200 participants, addressed the role of education, youth engagement, and community awareness in fostering a corruption-free culture. Additionally, the adoption of AI-powered monitoring tools for transparency in procurement and licensing was highlighted as a key innovation to strengthen anti-corruption efforts.

Regional Forums

Global Compact Network Indonesia, in collaboration with the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), organized a Responsible Business Forum 2024 to commemorate the International Anti-Corruption Day, emphasizing the importance of ethical business practices. This event, attended by over 250 participants from Indonesia and neighboring countries, served as a platform for discussion on corporate integrity and accountability.  It encouraged companies to implement robust governance and anti-corruption measures to experience improved operational efficiency and stronger stakeholder trust. Leading up to the forum, Network Indonesia also hosted a CEO Breakfast Forum 2024, gathering 40 C-Suite leaders from diverse sectors to explore ways to integrate ethical practices into business operations and driving Collective Action.

Kenya hosted the 5th Africa Business Ethics Conference (ABEC), organized in partnership with Global Compact Network Kenya and attended by 142 participants. The conference called for the harmonization of anti-corruption laws across Africa, emphasizing the need for unified policies to strengthen the continent's collective fight against corruption and foster a new era of ethical business practices.

Held under the theme "A Brave New Africa: Business Growth in Times of Economic Turbulence," the conference brought together leaders from the private sector, Government, and civil society to tackle Africa's most pressing economic challenges while advocating for integrity and transparency.

Advancing Commitment

In Portugal, as part of the International Anti-Corruption Day Campaign, the Portuguese Platform for Integrity (PPI)—a joint initiative by the Global Compact Network Portugal and the Portuguese Business Ethics Association—launched the Integrity Seal. This seal showcases the business commitment to fighting corruption and was adopted by 128 businesses.

In Ukraine, over 300 participants gathered at the ‘’Business Integrity in Action: Zero Tolerance for Corruption” forum, organized by Global Compact Ukraine in collaboration with USAID and UK International Development, to discuss how companies can not only endure but also enhance their reputation during a full-scale war by adhering to the highest standards of integrity and compliance.

For the fourth consecutive year, Global Compact Network Ukraine invited businesses, civil society organizations, and Government institutions to reaffirm their commitment to integrity by signing the Memorandum of Cooperation on Anti-Corruption, with 13 new companies joining the initiative, bringing the total of signatories to 64.

Knowledge Sharing and Dialogue

To celebrate the Day, Global Compact Network Brazil hosted the 5th ‘’Action Against Corruption’’ event marking the conclusion of the Anti-Corruption Action Platform’s year, unveiling key initiatives, including a podcast ‘’compliance influencers’’, and resources. The event brought together 100 attendees from companies participating in Network Brazil.

For the occasion, the Global Compact Network France organized an online open discussion titled ''Transforming your company’s business model through integrity measures for better performance''. This event marked an important milestone, as the Network has, for the first time, appointed a group of experts on anti-corruption to be part of a Steering Committee. During the meeting, the Committee approved the upcoming 2025 anti-corruption programme, thereby reinforcing the growing focus on anticorruption and business integrity within the Network; and confirming increased programmatic collaboration with the French anti-corruption government agency in 2025.

Global Compact Network Thailand, in partnership with the Department of Rights Protection and Liberties, Ministry of Justice, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), hosted the 8th National Conference on Business and Human Rights. The conference, attended by over 100 participants, themed " Supply Chain Integrity: Addressing Corruption & Labour Rights Risks," addressed corruption risks within supply chains that could lead to labor rights violations. Network Thailand proposed four measures to manage corruption and human rights risks in migrant worker recruitment, including policy measures for safe and cost-effective immigration processes, promotion of ethical recruitment practices, the use of technology for transparency and traceability (including AI or Blockchain to reduce vulnerabilities), and encouraging companies to conduct comprehensive human rights due diligence throughout their operations aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.

In the United Kingdom, 70 representatives from business, civil society, and Government gathered for an engaging discussion on how businesses can promote integrity and advance anti-corruption commitments in the year ahead. Held in collaboration with Santander UK, Transparency International UK, and the Global Compact UK Network, the event featured expert insights and meaningful exchanges.

In Uruguay, experts analyzed corruption offenses and emphasized ethics in the private sector during the Open Exchange on Anti-Corruption event. The interactive event, attended by 30 participants, highlighted the importance of transparency, ethics, and sustainability in the private sector.

Across these diverse celebrations, a consistent message emerged: Joining efforts through Anti-Corruption Collective Action initiatives is the most powerful  way to level the playing field for all stakeholders involved in order to create fair market conditions for all participants of different sizes and resources.
